Exhibition Welcome to Salzkammergut

The permanent exhibition “Hotel Austria — Welcome to Salzkammergut” at the Bad Ischl City Museum traces the remarkable story of how this mountain lake district became one of the most beloved and visited regions in the German-speaking world. From its discovery by the Habsburgs and the European aristocracy in the early nineteenth century, through its golden age as the summer playground of artists, composers, writers and imperial courtiers, to its transformation into a destination of international tourism — the exhibition tells this story with depth, warmth and a wealth of fascinating historical material. It is essential context for anyone who wants to understand the region they are visiting.

The exhibition draws on the extraordinary cultural heritage of Bad Ischl and the wider Salzkammergut. Emperor Franz Josef I spent his summers here for over sixty years; Brahms, Bruckner, Lehár and Johann Strauss composed in the shade of these mountains; Katharina Schratt, the Emperor’s close companion, had her villa just steps from the imperial gardens. The story of how this relatively remote Alpine region became the cultural and social centre of the Habsburg summer world is one of the great stories of nineteenth-century European culture, and the Hotel Austria exhibition tells it compellingly and accessibly.

Bad Ischl itself, as host city of the European Capital of Culture 2024, has invested substantially in its museums and cultural institutions, and the City Museum is a particular beneficiary of that attention. The building itself is charming — a typical Salzkammergut townhouse, beautifully maintained — and its location in the heart of Bad Ischl makes it easy to combine a museum visit with a walk through the town, lunch at one of the excellent local restaurants, and a stroll along the celebrated Esplanade beside the Traun river.

From Hallstatt Hideaway, Bad Ischl is just twenty minutes away — making a visit to the Hotel Austria exhibition an easy and highly rewarding half-day excursion. For guests who want to understand the history and significance of the landscape they are exploring, this exhibition provides invaluable insight. The combination of the museum, the town’s imperial architecture, and the natural beauty of the Traun valley makes Bad Ischl one of the most compelling destinations in the entire Salzkammergut.
