Mondsee Lake Festival

The Mondsee Lake Festival is the biggest folk festival on the shores of Lake Mondsee — three days of live music, DJ sets and culinary celebrations on the lakeside promenade, building to the spectacular fireworks display that lights up the sky above the water and transforms the entire lake into a shimmering mirror of colour and light. Families, music fans and food lovers are equally well served by this joyful, generous festival, which has become one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the Upper Austrian summer calendar.

The festival programme spans the full range of popular entertainment — live bands and acts drawing on folk, pop and contemporary music traditions, DJ sets that keep the crowd dancing as the evening progresses, and a culinary offering that celebrates the finest regional produce of the Salzkammergut and Upper Austria. The lakeside setting, with the illuminated spires of Mondsee Basilica visible in the background, gives the festival an atmosphere of extraordinary beauty and festivity that no indoor event could replicate. Mondsee is one of the warmest and most beautiful lakes in the Salzkammergut, its clear blue-green waters making it a magnet for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts throughout the summer. The charming market town on its northern shore is known throughout Austria — and to film fans across the world — as the location where the wedding scene in The Sound of Music was filmed, in the magnificent Romanesque basilica that still dominates the town square. Even without the festival, Mondsee and its lake are well worth a half-day or full-day excursion from Hallstatt.

From Hallstatt Hideaway, Mondsee is approximately forty-five minutes away through some of the most scenic landscapes in Upper Austria. The route takes guests through the heart of the Salzkammergut, past several other beautiful lakes, making the drive itself a pleasure.
