Check-in is from 2:00 PM. You will always be personally welcomed by your Guest Assistant – simply ring the bell at the main door. An early check-in can be requested from your Guest Assistant on the day of arrival, subject to availability.

You can drop off your luggage anytime from 8:00 AM onward, even if your room isn’t ready yet. The Hallstatt Hideaway also offers a luggage service: guests can leave their luggage with the Guest Assistant before and after their stay, at any time.

Yes, the Hallstatt Hideaway is especially dog-friendly! Since our house dog “Dr. Faustus” moved in, dogs are welcome in all rooms.

Yes – dogs are not permitted in the Salzwelten salt mines, but the Hallstatt Hideaway offers a dog-sitting service (€15/hour), which can be requested before arrival or spontaneously with the Guest Assistants.

A historic highlight: the parish church with views over the lake, right next to the famous Bone House with its painted skulls – a unique piece of Hallstatt’s history. The cemetery itself is also worth a visit.

Of particular note inside the church is the late-Gothic winged altar by master Leonhard Astl (also known as the “Miners’ Altar”) – renowned far beyond the borders of Austria, a donation from the local miners and an art-historical treasure. Created around 1510–1520 in Astl’s workshop, it is considered one of the most significant and elaborate late-Gothic winged altars in Upper Austria – richly adorned with gilded sculptures and reliefs.

One of the most photographed sites in Europe – the small church sits amid Hallstatt’s narrow lanes and is a popular photo spot away from the bustle of the market square.

Architecturally notable is the church’s design as a transverse church (Querkirche): the main entrance is located at the centre of the southern long side, while the altar sits in a small apse at the centre of the northern side. A round-arched arcade divides the interior into a narrower southern nave and a wider northern nave. With its transversely positioned nave, the building already approaches the typology of a central-plan structure – an intriguing architectural solution that harmoniously blends elements of the Romanesque and Gothic styles.

For history enthusiasts: the museum showcases the region’s 7,000-year salt and cultural history, including finds from the Hallstatt period (Iron Age) and the famous burial ground.

Important note: The most significant original finds from Hallstatt, however, are not on display here but at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. There, Room 12 is a dedicated theme room devoted entirely to the Hallstatt site, featuring spectacular gold finds, thousands-of-years-old Bronze Age carrying sacks, Europe’s oldest surviving wooden staircase, and a 3D terrain model of the Hallstatt high valley. The Natural History Museum also operates the historic Hallstatt salt mine as its own outpost – so anyone with a deeper interest in the Hallstatt period should plan a side trip to Vienna.

Since the 19th century, Bad Ischl has been known as a traditional spa town and was the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who spent many summer months here with his family – hence its nickname, the “Imperial Town.” Since the 19th century, the brine spa has attracted visitors seeking regeneration through salt, water and air as natural healers. Bad Ischl is closely linked to Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), who frequently stayed here. Famous composers such as Franz Lehár and Johannes Brahms also visited the town.

Highlights for your excursion:

• Kaiservilla (Imperial Villa): the original preserved chambers of the imperial family; here, in 1914, Emperor Franz Joseph signed the manifesto that triggered the First World War.
• Kaiserpark (Imperial Park): an expansive park featuring the Marmorschlössl (Marble Chalet).
